Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple

Rameswaram, a town in Tamil Nadu, is located in the Gulf of Mannar at the very tip of the Indian peninsula and is a famous pilgrim destination. Along with Banaras, it is regarded as one of the Char Dhams or amongst the four holiest places of worship according to Hindus. Moreover as per popular belief, this is the place from where Lord Rama built a bridge, across the sea to Lanka to rescue his wife Sita from her abductor Ravana.

Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple
Famously known for the longest corridor in the world which is around 197 metres long from East to West and is 133 metres wide from South to North, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is also one of the 12 Jyotirlinga (pillar of light) temples. It is known for its intricate architecture with massive sculptured pillars which even has a Gopuram of around 39 metres. Interestingly, the history of the temple is linked with “Ramayana” where the lingam is believed to be installed by Lord Rama after the termination of the war with Ravana.

Agnitheertham
This temple is famous for the holy waters and thus is ideal for bathing. With calm and serene surroundings, it is a temple where pilgrims offer prayers in honour of their ancestors.

Dhanushkodi
Being the southern-most tip of the island, it is a strip of land about one km wide and 18 km long on the eastern end of Rameswaram. It has the Indian Ocean on one side, the Bay of Bengal on the other and their confluence is bow-shaped with the strip of land resembling a drawn arrow, thus lending the name Dhanuskodi. It is an important pilgrim destination as the Adi Sethu or the arrowhead is regarded as a sacred place to perform religious rites. Also known for its scenic beauty and bird watching prospects, it was known to be completely washed away by the 1964 cyclone.

Gandamadana Parvatham
Located 3 km away from the island, it is a hillock known for being the highest point in the region from where the entire Rameswaram can be viewed. One can also catch a glimpse of Lord Rama’s foot print on a chakra.

Kalam House
The Former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s House is located on the Mosque Street and houses a museum that has his childhood memoirs. Maintained by his elder brother, this place displays many of his experiences, awards and accolades along with a store that sells numerous merchandises.

How to Reach
Rameswaram is well connected by air through the Madurai Airport (around 163 km) and by rail via both Madurai and Chennai.
