The ancient sun temple of Konark is located at Konark in Odisha. It is often called as ‘Black Pagoda’. It is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Orissa which is well known for the splendid carvings that add up to the charm of the ancient temple. Built in the form of a giant chariot decorated with massive wheels, it depicts the majestic seven horse chariot of the Sun god. History
The remarkable Konark Sun Temple was constructed by Narasimhadeva I of the Ganga Dynasty in the mid 13th century. This grand sculptural glory is dedicated to Sun deity symbolizing the arc of his journey every day and night.
Architectural Grandeur of the Temple
The magnificent temple is carved like a chariot of the Sun god with flawless 12 pairs of wheels drawn by seven exquisitely carved horses. A flight of steps lead to the main entrance guarded by two beautiful sculptures of lions.
Natamandir
Located elegantly at the entrance of the temple, Natamandir, marks the majestic place where the dancers used to perform mesmerizing dances in the homage of Sun god.
Konark Dance Festival
This 5 day long dance festival is surely a lavish treat to the senses which is highly enjoyed by the tourists. The festival marks the celebration of different dance styles like Kathak, Odissi, Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudui, Manipuri and Mohiniyattam. It is held in the stunning Natamandir, where the evenings come alive with the sound of ghungroo bells and flute.
