Periyar is a nature reserve in Kerala set high in the Western Ghats around Tamil Nadu border. Being a protected area covering a landmass of around 777 sq. kilometres, its core zone of around 350 sq. km is made into the Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve. It also houses one of India's largest tiger populations along with Indian Bisons and wild boars.

The Periyar National Park
Spread across vast areas of thick evergreen forests, it was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978. Also, it houses a picturesque artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar River at the heart of the reserves. Herds of wild elephants, deers, bisons and other rare species of animals can be viewed here. Located amidst the lap of the mountains, four rare species of primates are also found here namely the rare lion-tailed macaque, the Nilgiri Langur, Common Langur and Bonnet Macaque. One can easily access this place via trek routes, boating and jeep safari.

Speaking of other attractions are Kumily, a small town famous for its spice trade and nearness to other nearby tourist spots, and the beautiful Cardamom Hills.
How to Reach
Periyar is connected by air through the Cochi International Airport and by rail via Kottayam. Moreover, Kumily, the nearest town from Periyar, is well connected by both state and private buses from Kottayam, Ernakulam and Madurai.
